Chunking is another way of structuring text to make it scannable and more reader-friendly online.
To accompany the inverted pyramid style of writing and to make texts more scannable, you should write chunky paragraphs. Chunking involves breaking text into short digestible sections with breaks in between.
A chunky paragraph
§ Is short - people prefer to read a short passage than long continuous passages online. Short paragraphs encourage skimming and scanning. Eg, if a paragraph has more than six or eight lines, split them into two shorter paragraphs to make them more readable.
§ Contains only one main idea that is written in the topic sentence found at the start of the paragraph. All other sentences in that paragraph must relate to that main idea.
§ Uses the same words to refer to the same thing (to avoid confusing the reader)
§ Uses linking words to show connections between sentences (eg next, then, etc)
§ Is written in the line length users expect to see on their browsers. Often, one sentence can form a good online paragraph
Has lots of space around them - organize the text in a more open format and use more paragraph breaks, headings, bulleted lists and tables to make pages more scan-friendly and make the information stand out more for the reader.
