In the first lesson of the course last week, we looked at the definitions of new media, its characteristics and conventions as well as some user behaviour of using new media.
This week's lesson will follow-up on what we discussed previously and will focus on the trends and issues in communicating using new media.
What are some of the trends in new media today and in the near future? Can you think of any to share with the class? Do some brainstorming with your classmates and come up with a few to share with the class.
Look at the blog posts in Blogscapes. The blog has posts on various issues related to the use of new media. What do you think of the use of social computing tools, especially in the workplace? What do you think of how new media is being used in politics today, or how cyber-bullying is affecting society? Discuss these and add your comments to the blog posts in Blogscapes.
You could also take a look at this clip on a social networking project and a vodcast on social networking.
Following the discussion and presentation, you will need to start thinking about which issue you would like to focus on and research on for your assignment on Presentation of New Media Issues.
I'll be circulating some articles to help you consider the various issues you could look at. You would also want to look at Blogscapes as well as other online sites to help you decide on which issue you would like to work on. You could also take a look at what some of the past students have done, just to get an idea of the range of issues available. There are many more, as the world of new media is dynamic and constantly evolving. I'll be providing more details of the assignment in class.
Think carefully about the type of new media format that you would like to use to present your information, and also how you would like to engage the class in discussion.
Do also look at the Voicethread in the next post. Do discuss your ideas with your tutors in class.
Enjoy the assignment!
